Connect existing pedestrian and cycle routes within Salisbury and allow for future opportunities to expand the cycle network across the city. The Maltings redevelopment must include an improved cycle route to complete National Cycle Network Route 45. It is important to safeguard Radial Greenway 1 (St Peter's Place - Five Rivers’ route).
Public access should be enhanced on one side of the river bank only.
Safety is important. We need separate paths/areas for cyclists and walkers and ensure all paths are wide enough/appropriately surfaced to accommodate all users.
Use the natural environment to bring all destinations together to form an attractive network of places.
We did
The proposed scheme will improve access to the city centre through the inter-connection of open spaces using high quality footpaths and cycle ways. Our design accommodates existing proposals like the Radial Greenway 1 and provides appropriate diversions where required.
The path surfaces at the Ashley Road site will be resin-bound gravel or tarmac rolled in aggregate to ensure that they are accessible to all, blend in with the surrounding landscape and are sufficiently robust for their level of use. Within The Maltings, the new pathways will be tarmacked to provide a hard-wearing surface due to its high use. Any new footpaths/cycleways have been designed to meet and exceed (where possible) set guidelines on width and material requirements.
At The Maltings and Central Car Park site, we will improve the public area along the western (right) bank of the River Avon through The Maltings to create an urban park feel. On the eastern (left) bank of the River Avon, we have designed a wildlife corridor with the channel margin having a more natural appearance and no public access.
